Green roofs are designed to absorb rainwater and alleviate its impact on local drainage systems. This is achieved by capturing rainwater at the source and using this to support the growth of the vegetation that sits on the roof’s top layer. Green roof plants will release some of this water back into the environment via a process known as transpiration, which also reduces air temperature. Any excess water collected by the roof either evaporates or is slowly released through an in-built drainage system.
In many cases, green living roofs can last between 40 to 50 years. The exact lifespan of a green roof depends on a variety of factors, including the quality of its materials and the plants and vegetation used. A green roof’s longevity will be further ensured if it is installed by qualified professionals and regularly inspected for maintenance issues.
Blue roofs are designed to emulate natural drainage patterns and prevent local systems from becoming overwhelmed. They work by collecting and retaining rainwater on the roof’s surface before slowly releasing it back into the environment at a controlled rate. In some instances, the water captured by a blue roof can be stored for reuse elsewhere, such as for irrigation or toilet flushing.
In most instances, a blue roof will last for around 30-40 years. There are many factors that influence this, including the quality and type of materials used in its construction and how regularly it is inspected for issues.
